Training carbon accounting

Training carbon accounting

Fighting climate change starts with insight, into where to start and what to aim for. A growing number of companies have a need to calculate their corporate carbon footprint and assess what they can do to reduce this footprint over time.

Carbon accounting can be a tedious process and so you want to do it first time right. A good understanding of the carbon accounting principles and the leading standards is therefore essential.

On Tuesday 9 December, Intire will be organizing a carbon accounting training that consists of two modules that can be attended separately or combined:

  • A morning session for people that want to familiarize themselves with the basics of carbon accounting and the essentials of the greenhouse gas protocol.
  • An afternoon session for those people who are facing the challenge of calculating the scope 3 emissions or need to set targets.

Morning session: the basics of carbon accounting

In an interactive session we will guide you through the essentials of carbon accounting and key principles of the greenhouse gas protocol.

Topics that we will address are:

  • What are greenhouse gasses?
  • Why report on carbon?
    • Regulatory requirements
  • What are Scopes 1, 2, 3?
  • Consolidation approach
    • Organisational boundaries
    • System boundaries
  • What data do you need to collect?

We will alternate theory with small practical exercises.

Afternoon session: Deep-dive into Scope 3 and target setting

For those already having some experience with carbon accounting, we will dive into the details. We will have a closer look at the value chain emissions, the minimum boundary and the data requirements. In addition we look at target setting and creating a roadmap to reach these targets.

Topics that we will address are:

  • How to go about with the 15 categories of scope 3
    • What is mandatory to include, what is optional
  • Calculation methods and data requirements
  • Target setting
    • Top-down vs bottom-up
    • Science based targets
    • Baseline year and target year
  • Identifying carbon reduction levers
  • How to address the biogenic emissions, carbon capture and removals

We will alternate theory with small practical exercises.
