The main driver of deforestation is the expansion of agricultural land linked to the production of commodities such as cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, rubber, and several of their derived products, including leather, chocolate, tyres, and furniture. The Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) aims to address EU-driven global deforestation, thereby reducing biodiversity loss and carbon emissions associated with the consumption of these commodities.
Under the Regulation, any operator or trader placing these commodities on the EU market—or exporting them from it—must be able to prove that the products do not originate from recently deforested land and have not contributed to forest degradation.
